A Fun Experiment Showcases the Power of Positive Reinforcement
Self-belief is a powerful motivator for success. In this video we see it put to the test as two people are asked to shoot a basketball free throw, first while wearing a blindfold and then unobstructed. The person who is given positive reinforcement when shooting blindfolded gets such a boost that, when the blindfold is removed, her shot-making success increases—even though her skill level at the outset wasn’t great. Meanwhile, the participant who started as a free throw ace gets worse and worse as the amount of negative feedback he receives increases.
