An Artist Preserves the Memory and Dignity of His Community with a Surprising Project
Rusty Zimmerman of Crown Heights in Brooklyn created 200 oil portraits of people in his community to create a point: that they all belong. While he was painting their portraits, he also listened to and recorded their stories. He believes that people’s stories overlap and connect, as we are all one people. “Everybody is longing to connect,” Rusty says. We should get to know each other and take care of each other. Rusty’s beautiful project goes a long way toward showing not only that he cares about others, but that everyone should care about others.
