When she was 49, doctors told Vivian Stancil that she didn’t have long to live. She was so overweight that her body was giving out. Blind and terrified of water, Vivian made the courageous decision to swim for her life. She conquered her fear of water and dove in—literally. She not only learned to swim, but became a Senior Olympics swim champion. Now 70, she has started a foundation that teaches swimming for free, and is also a city commissioner for people with disabilities. “My work is not finished,” says Vivian.
