This Dad Gave His Adopted Kids the Childhood He Wished He’d Always Had
Rob Scheer had 9 siblings growing up, and as a foster kid, he had to keep most of his belongings in a black garbage bag. After years of abuse, he made it out onto the streets, joined the military, got a job, and eventually found a wonderful partner to live with. The feeling of being a father, and being loved, however, seemed out of his reach. After many years and court struggles later, he and his husband have fostered and now adopted four kids—and they started a nonprofit together to make sure fewer foster kids feel the fear and pain he felt growing up.
