Author Elizabeth Lesser describes the healing process that occurs when we put aside pride and defensiveness in our relationships. Discussing her own experience with donating bone marrow to her ailing sister, she recalls that she wanted to “clean up” the relationship with her sister before they would literally share blood. In therapy, they were able to get past old hurts and share their true selves. “Don’t wait for a life and death situation like this,” Elizabeth cautions. "Be like a new kind of first responder ... the one to take the first courageous step toward the other.” Underneath hurt and pride, there is something beautiful to be discovered.
