Heather Lanier's daughter Fiona has Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, a genetic condition that results in developmental delays. In this TED Talk, Lanier discusses why categorizing her daughter’s progress as normal or abnormal, and labeling her daughter as tragic or angelic robs her of her humanity. In order for a person to live a full life, we need to release cultural biases about good or bad. Using the parable of the farmer who took life as it came, Lanier describes how her and Fiona’s lives flourished once Lanier stopped labeling Fiona’s milestones. Only when we accept the messiness and complexity of being human and stop trying to fix what’s not “normal” can we truly embrace life.
