A Neuroscientist Explores How Our Sense of "Self" Develops
We have imaging technologies that now allow us to go inside the human brain and see axons, neurons, synapses and cells; but we don’t see human consciousness, or senses of "Self". We all have a Self—a “Me” present in our own minds—but how does this autobiographical Self develop? Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio gives a fascinating TED Talk that explores this question. He suggests that the Self is built on the basis of past memories, the anticipated future, reasoning, imagination, creativity, and our cultures.
