We think having options is a good thing, but there’s a flip side. An endless string of choices can lead us to feel anxiety and guilt, because we worry that we’re making the wrong decisions. In this insightful TED Talk, philosopher Renata Salecl explains why having to make so many decisions isn’t necessarily a good thing. Choices are unpredictable, and are linked to risk and loss. Instead, Salecl says, we should stop worrying about personal choices and focus on our power as social thinkers. When we focus on the collective, instead of just ourselves, our stress levels will diminish.
